Giants co-owner John Mara announces cancer diagnosis, says he’s ‘optimistic’

Giants co-owner John Mara announced in a statement on Monday that he has been diagnosed with cancer and said he feels “strong and optimistic.” “I have recently been diagnosed with cancer and have been following the treatment plan recommended by an outstanding team of doctors,” Mara, 70, said. “I’m feeling strong and optimistic, and I’m committed to seeing this through to a positive outcome. “I plan to remain active with the team throughout my treatment, and I’m fortunate to be surrounded by incredible support — personally, professionally and medically,” he added. “I ask that you respect my privacy and my family’s privacy at this time.” The Mara and Tisch families have each owned 50% of the franchise since 1991, with John Mara and Steve Tisch as the controlling owners for their respective families since the passing of their fathers, Wellington Mara and Bob Tisch, in 2005. The families recently agreed to sell a 10% minority stake in the franchise to Julia Koch and members of t...

1 killed, 9 wounded in shooting, arson at Michigan church

At least one person was killed and nine others wounded in a shooting at a Mormon church in Michigan on Sunday morning, police said. The attacker drove a truck into the church in Grand Blanc, set the building on fire and opened fire on congregants before cops shot and killed him, according to authorities. He was identified only as a 40-year-old man. “We are still trying to determine exactly when and where the fire ended up coming from and how it got started,” Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye said. “We believe it was deliberately set, though, by the suspect.” Related Articles PHOTOS: At least 1 dead in Michigan church shooting, fire Investigators believe there may be more deceased victims who were trapped in the burning building . Bloodbath at Bethpage continues as Europe dominates Team USA again Saturday morning at Ryder Cup

Keegan Bradley stuck to his guns Saturday morning and now the Americans are in deep trouble at the Ryder Cup. Team USA’s captain ran back two incredibly unsuccessful pairings in Saturday’s foursome (alternate shot) session. Collin Morikawa and Harris English were dominated for a second straight day by Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood — 3 & 2, joining Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley — who fell to Robert MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland (1 up) — as the most disappointing groups of the first two days here at Bethpage Black on Long Island as the U.S. squad now trails Europe 8.5 to 3.5. Bradley stated it was important to stick to this strategy despite how poorly it looked in Day 1. “They beat us today, but you know, we’re really comfortable with our plan,” Bradley said after Friday’s disaster. “We’re really comfortable with those two players [Morikawa and English]. Excited who they are playing tomorrow. “[Should] be an exciting match, and we’re sticking to our plan. We’re not goin...

16-year-old suspected of killing 13-year-old Queens boy outside Dunkin’ Donuts surrenders to NYPD

A 16-year-old suspected of fatally shooting a 13-year-old boy on his way to school during a gang beef surrendered to police Friday, officials said. The 16-year-old boy turned himself in at the 105th Precinct station house in Queens Village in the killing of Sanjay Samuel on Monday morning, cops said. Criminal charges weren’t immediately filed. The Daily News is not releasing the teen’s name because of his age. Cops on Thursday released images of the shooter in the hopes someone recognizes him. NYPD detectives were working with an attorney to broker the teen’s surrender, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Thursday. Investigators learned that Sanjay on social media identified himself as a gang member affiliated with the Bloods. “Based just off of (Sanjay’s) social media posts, he has some affiliation or association with SSM, which he posts about quite frequently,” Kenny said of the victim. SSM is a Bloods set known as “Sex, Money, Murder,” Kenny said. The motive for the k...

Boy, 15, arrested for bomb threat at Long Beach High School

A 15-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a bomb threat at Long Beach High School on Long Island, police said Thursday. The teen, who was not identified due to his age, was charged with one count of making a terroristic threat and released, according to Nassau County police. He’s due back in court on Oct. 9. Cops said the arrest was in connection with a threat on Sept. 16 at Long Beach High , which resulted in the school going into lockdown for several hours. Normal operations resumed after police cleared the building, which sits about 20 miles southeast of Central Park. The threat was the second within seven days at the school. On Sept. 10, the 1,300-student school was also locked down for the threat of an active shooter . In both cases, the school was cleared with no injuries. No arrests have been announced in connection with the fake shooter threat. High school, colleges and grade schools have all been dealing with a variety of false threats since school resumed acros...

Two new FDNY firefighters follow in footsteps of their 9/11 hero dads

Two probationary FDNY firefighters with deep connections to 9/11 plan to cull some light from their darkest memories by following their fathers’ examples and dedicating their lives to protect New Yorkers, the Daily News has learned. Among the 344 probationary firefighters graduating Thursday, newly minted Firefighters Ian Montesi and Francis Donohue know all about the meaning of sacrifice in service of one’s city. Montesi’s father, Firefighter Michael Montesi , a member of Rescue 1, died as the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed during the 9/11 terror attack. Donohue’s dad, retired FDNY Lt. James Donohue, died from a 9/11-related illness in 2023. “I can’t wait. It feels good to finally get through probie school,” Ian, 28, told the Daily News. “I’m excited to follow in my father’s footsteps and pursue the dream me and my two brothers have always had.” New York Daily News Hero of the Month, FDNY Firefighter Mike Montesi of the Scuba Unit of Rescue Co. 1, is pictured o...

Bryson DeChambeau tabbed ‘the difference’ for Team USA in Ryder Cup

Team USA believes they have the X-factor. As practice rounds continued at Bethpage Black on Tuesday ahead of Friday’s 45th Ryder Cup, U.S. captain Keegan Bradley’s squad has been preparing for vengeance against Luke Donald’s European team after their tough defeat in 2023 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome. However, that 2023 USA team was without a player that they feel is crucial to their success this weekend: Bryson DeChambeau. “I was telling Keegan, I feel like Bryson could be the difference for us,” Xander Schauffele said. “In a strange way, from the standpoint of feeding into these fans, the style of golf he plays. … Like, this is his arena. If he views himself as a gladiator golfer. This is as good as it gets. … “I’m excited to sort of see what he can do, and hopefully get a lot of points up on the board because his points might hit harder than maybe my points, for example, just because of how he might celebrate and get these fans into this tournament quickly.” D...

Breaking down the Mets’ playoff odds as MLB season enters final week

Even though the Mets no longer control their own playoff destiny, at least one leading model still projects them to make the postseason. Ever so slightly. FanGraphs pegs the Mets’ playoff odds at 51.4% , a fluid number that the website calculated by running simulations of the remaining MLB schedule. Of course, games are played on the field, not inside computers, which is why nothing really matters other than how the Mets and the teams around them perform over the season’s final week. “We’ve just got to win,” first baseman Pete Alonso said after Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Washington Nationals . “It’s simple. Winning solves everything at this point. We’ve just got to do it. That’s it. We’ve got to solve our issues between the lines.” The Mets (80-76) are tied with the Cincinnati Reds for the third and final National League wild card spot, but the red-hot Reds hold the tiebreaker after winning the head-to-head season series. That means the Mets must finish at least a game better than...

Two pedestrians struck, one fatally, in chain-reaction Queens crash

Two women crossing the street near a Queens expressway service road were struck, one fatally, in a chain-reaction crash, cops said Sunday. The two victims were crossing the street in Jamaica at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday when a 58-year-old woman driving a 2008 Toyota Scion west on Liberty Ave. stopped in the left-turn lane near the Van Wyck Expressway service road to let them pass, cops said. That’s when a 65-year-old woman driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz C 300 rear-ended the Scion, sending it hurtling into the two pedestrians, police said. One of the pedestrians, a 51-year-old woman, wound up pinned underneath the Scion, cops said. Medics took her to Jamaica Hospital, where she died. Her name was not immediately released. The other victim, a 34-year-old woman, was taken to the same hospital in stable condition. Both drivers remained at the scene and faced no immediate charges as cops continue to investigate. from New York Daily News https://ift.tt/sj4lEY7 via IFTTT

U.K., Canada and Australia recognize Palestinian state

The U.K., Canada and Australia on Sunday officially recognized a Palestinian state , further isolating the U.S. and Israel diplomatically. “Today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly as prime minister of this great country that the United Kingdom formally recognizes the state of Palestine ,” U.K. leader Keir Starmer said in a video message. The coordinated move from the three Commonwealth nations comes ahead of the United Nations General Assembly this week in New York. More nations, including France , are expected to recognize a Palestinian state during the global meetings. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was infuriated by Sunday’s announcement, and vowed to prevent a Palestinian state from forming. “A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River ,” Netanyahu said. “The international community will hear from us on this matter in the coming days.” The Israeli leader is scheduled to speak Friday at the General Assemb...

Historic Bethpage Black set to host ‘biggest golf event ever’ with 2025 Ryder Cup

Team USA’s Justin Thomas didn’t downplay the hype. “I think it’ll hands down be the biggest golf event ever,” Thomas wrote on social media. Long Island’s Bethpage Black has been home to numerous historic golf events this century, but arguably none bigger than the upcoming Ryder Cup, beginning on Friday at the New York State-owned park. Bethpage won the bid to host the 2024 Ryder Cup back in 2013, but the COVID pandemic pushed the Ryder Cup calendar back a year. Bethpage’s storied history in the sport will only grow once the teams representing the United States and Europe tee off against each other at 7:10 a.m. on Friday. The Black — famously known for its difficulty — has previously hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Opens as well as the 2019 PGA Championship. The 2002 Open is where Bethpage put itself on the map. It was the first time the USGA had awarded the major championship to a local municipal golf course, breaking the tradition of playing at top-tier private country clubs. As a r...

Jimmy Kimmel negotiating compromise to bring talk show back on air

Jimmy Kimmel and Disney are reportedly negotiating a compromise that would allow for his talk show to return to air. Business and legal representatives for the longtime late-night host have been in talks with the higher-ups at ABC and its parent company, Disney, with the hopes of bringing “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” back to TVs nationwide, Variety reported, citing three sources with knowledge on the matter. The show was abruptly pulled off the air on Wednesday, with executives saying it would be “preempted indefinitely” over Kimmel’s remarks about the discourse triggered by the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk . Since then, the 11:35 p.m. slot has been filled with reruns of “Celebrity Family Feud,” and a Charlie Kirk memorial special  that aired Friday. Kirk was shot on Sept. 10 during a student Q&A at Utah Valley University as part of his American Comeback Tour. He was hit in the neck by a lone bullet during the outdoor event on the Orem campus and was rushe...

Taylor Swift to throw theatrical ‘release party’ for new album

The limited event — which Variety describes as a theatrical spin on the “secret sessions” Swift used to host for select fans at her home — will begin simultaneously across time zones at 3 p.m. ET that day and run through Oct. 5. The 35-year-old Grammy winner confirmed the news Friday in an Instagram Story linking to tickets at AMC as well as Cinemark and Regal theaters. The 89-minute feature will include the debut of “The Fate of Ophelia” music video and its behind-the-scenes footage, in addition to Swift’s album commentary and lyric videos for her 12-track 12th studio album. “While normally prohibited during traditional showtimes, AMC guests are welcome to sing and dance during ‘Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party ...

Trump tells PM Starmer Charlie Kirk could’ve become president

President Trump Thursday said Thursday that Charlie Kirk could’ve become president one day. Speaking at a joint press conference with United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump heaped praise on the slain conservative activist  and disclosed that he told Kirk he had what it takes to win the White House. “He was a great young man with an incredible future,” Trump said. “Some people said he might be president someday. I told him, I said, ‘Charlie, I think you have a good shot at someday being president.’” Trump said Kirk was “heinously assassinated for speaking his mind.” He plans to attend Kirk’s memorial service Sunday in Arizona. Starmer underlined the global significance of Kirk’s murder, saying he called Trump to express condolences after Kirk was shot dead last week during a speech on a Utah college campus. “It sent shock waves through the world,” Starmer said. Trump also derided late night host Jimmy Kimmel, whose show was yanked off the air under pressure from...

Aaron Judge, Cal Raleigh among MLB stars who have milestones within reach during stretch run

Cal Raleigh might not be done making history just yet. When the Seattle Mariners slugger struck his 55th home run of the year on Tuesday night, he broke a tie with Mickey Mantle to set a new single-season record for homers by a switch-hitter. And when Raleigh clubbed his 56th home run in his very next at-bat, he tied Ken Griffey Jr. for the Mariners’ single-season record. Passing Griffey is next on Raleigh’s to-do list, but it’s not the only milestone the man known as Big Dumper has a realistic chance at reaching. Here’s a look at the history that Raleigh and other MLB players can make as the regular season nears its end. RALEIGH Raleigh’s latest home run surge has him within striking distance of 60 home runs. If he can get there, Raleigh would become the fourth American League player — and the first non-Yankee — to hit 60 in a season. Babe Ruth hit 60 in 1927, and Roger Maris broke his record with 61 in 1961. The AL single-season record now belongs to Aaron Judge , who h...

New Jersey woman sues McDonald’s over hot coffee burn at drive-thru

A New Jersey woman is suing a Camden County McDonald’s over serious burns she’s said to have sustained from coffee handed to her through a drive-thru window. Pamela Evans claims “negligently overheated coffee to a temperature unsafe for handling and/or consumption by the public” was served to her on Sept. 4, 2023, according to NJ.com. The plaintiff alleges her coffee order was “negligently” handed to her in a fashion that caused the hot liquid to spill. Evans claims to have sustained further “serious injuries” when she reflexively pulled her hand hand away, slamming it against the door of her car. The lawsuit filed Aug. 29 alleges the plaintiff’s permanent injuries prevented her from working as medical costs accrued. Evans charges the fast food giant was negligent in its hiring practices, training and employee supervision. It’s not clear how much money she seeks in damages. McDonald’s didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. A New Mexico jury famously awarded $2.8 mi...

PBR brings bull riding, Western vibes to UBS Arena as NY Mavericks host event

It’s football season and New Yorkers are chanting for the cowboys. No, not the Dallas Cowboys. Get real. Professional Bull Riders, a sport that mixes rodeo grit with arena-sized  spectacle, is making inroads in New York. On Thursday, the New York Mavericks — the city’s pro bull riding team — kicks off a three-day homestand at UBS Arena in Elmont , drawing other riding teams from across the nation and fans from across the metro area. It’s a long way from the early days. Professional Bull Rider Kody Lostroh attends the premiere of "Daybreakers" at the SVA Theater on Jan. 7, 2010 in New York City.
