5 more arrested in connection with Louvre heist, jewels worth $102M still missing

Another five people have been arrested in connection with the daring daytime heist at the Louvre in Paris , but the stolen crown jewels — worth an estimated $102 million — continue to elude authorities. Each of the suspects were captured on Wednesday during a late-night operation in the Seine-Saint-Denis region in the suburbs of Paris, bringing the total number of people in custody to seven, State Prosecutor Laure Beccuau told RTL. She added that one of the new detainees is suspected of belonging to the brazen four-person crew — dubbed “the commando” by French media — that burst into the Apollo Gallery in broad daylight on Oct. 19. Two other suspected members of the quartet, both men in their 30s and from Seine-Saint-Denis, were arrested last weekend, both of them attempting to leave the country at the time, police said. They were placed under formal investigation for organized theft and criminal conspiracy and “partially admitted” their involvement after 96 hours of questioning,...

Josh Hart grabs 14 rebounds in Knicks debut after injury scare

Josh Hart was sore. Extremely sore. But nothing was going to stop him from making his season debut Friday night against the Boston Celtics. The Knicks forward had been sidelined for three weeks after suffering lower back spasms just seven minutes into the Oct. 2 preseason opener in Abu Dhabi. He missed the remainder of New York’s exhibition slate and the regular-season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday. “You don’t really know how often you use your back until you hurt your back,” Hart said at his locker ahead of tipoff Friday. “Last week I was feeling good, kinda hitting all my checkmarks, and then I tried to go through doing live contact stuff and it was just like — ‘yeah, nah. It’s not there. It’s not ready yet.’ “It’s frustrating ‘cause I wanna play. I wanna compete, but I gotta be smart with it.” And then it happened: Hart went through pregame warmups and decided to give it a go. A go for Hart? That meant a team-high 14 rebounds in ...

Nearly 3 million New Yorkers face losing SNAP benefits in November

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it will not use any of its $6 billion contingency fund to cover food stamp benefits in November should the government shutdown persist, waving off requests from state leaders, including New York Gov. Hochul, who warned that millions of New Yorkers could go hungry ahead of the holiday season. In a letter penned to Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins , Hochul called on her to use every authority at her disposal to ensure New Yorkers who rely on those benefits — most of them older adults, children and people with disabilities — don’t lose access to the critical assistance they need. “Federal statute authorizes the use of contingency funds to provide SNAP benefits in emergencies,” Hochul wrote. “No New Yorker should go hungry when a legal and funded remedy is available.” The  Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program — also referred to as SNAP or food stamps — is funded by the USDA and provides “benefits to low-income families to supple...

Movie Review: ‘Bugonia’ is a darkly comic gut punch

By JAKE COYLE, Associated Press Film Writer The twisted filmography of Yorgos Lanthimos has by now trained us to expect darkly comic visions of contemporary life, both savage and mundane. His movies have perhaps inspired the most “What?!” reactions of the last decade, partly because they’ve tried so hard to do so.
