Mets’ Freddy Peralta bringing good vibes to clubhouse with stars in WBC: ‘I’m just myself every day’

Freddy Peralta capped off a solid weekend for the Mets , both in Port St. Lucie and elsewhere in the World Baseball Classic. There were two pitching performances in Grapefruit League play that have the team feeling optimistic about their starting rotation, one from Kodai Senga and one from Peralta, and another from Clay Holmes for Team USA. Carson Benge had a 2-for-3 day with an RBI Sunday against the Yankees, and Juan Soto had a walkoff home run for the Dominican Republic. Camp might be quiet at the moment with several players away from the Mets to play for their respective countries, but as long as Peralta is around, there is always plenty of energy. Prior to his Sunday start at Clover Park, the right-hander won a clubhouse basketball game, winning coffee from a teammate. The 30-year-old Peralta always seems to be in a good mood. His reputation preceded him well before the Mets acquired him from the Milwaukee Brewers in January, and he’s lived up to it since reporting to his new ...

Panhandler killed in Brooklyn hit-and-run was struck by two SUV drivers: NYPD

A homeless panhandler killed on a Brooklyn street was struck by two different SUV drivers who both left the scene, police said Sunday. The unidentified victim, believed to be in his 30s, was standing in the westbound lanes of Linden Blvd. at Rockaway Ave. in Brownsville when the driver of a light-colored SUV going west hit him at 4:05 a.m. Saturday, cops said. That driver had a green light, cops said. A second light-colored SUV, also going west on Linden, then struck the victim as he lay in the roadway, cops said. Neither driver remained at the scene. Medics took the victim to Brookdale University Hospital, but he could not be saved. The victim had no ID on him, and police are still working to determine his identity. No arrests have been made. The victim panhandled around the area, a friend told the Daily News Saturday night, asking to remain anonymous. The friend described him as “a people’s person” and “down to earth.” She called the area where he was struck dangerous. “I al...

IED tossed at Jake Langan at Gracie Mansion anti-Islam protest was operational: NYPD

An improvised device thrown at Jan. 6 rioter Jake Langan at an anti-Muslim protest he organized outside Gracie Mansion was an actual explosive that could have caused carnage, police said Sunday. Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Kayumi, 19, were arrested in connection with the device at Saturday’s chaotic rally, which saw clashes between Lang and counter-protestors outside the Upper East Side mayoral residence of Mayor Mamdani. “The NYPD Bomb Squad has conducted a preliminary analysis of a device that was ignited and deployed at a protest yesterday and has determined that it is not a hoax device or a smoke bomb,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a social media post Sunday. “It is, in fact, an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death.” Tisch added that investigators are continuing to analyze a second device. Nets push Drake Powell out of his comfort zone with G League stint

Drake Powell is still in the G League as the Nets face the Detroit Pistons Saturday night at Little Caesars Arena, and given where Brooklyn is in the season, it might be the cleanest development play they’ve made with him in a while. The Nets sent their rookie first-round pick to Long Island on Feb. 27, a move that came in the middle of an extended shooting slump. Brooklyn recalled fellow rookie Ben Saraf to the big club at the same time and also signed Grant Nelson to a 10-day contract. For Powell, the No. 19 pick in the 2025 draft, it served as a reset. Across his first 30 appearances, the former Tar Heel averaged 6.4 points in 16.9 minutes per game while shooting 46.0% from the field and 32.4% from 3-point range. However, over his final 17 appearances before the assignment, Powell averaged 5.2 points in 19.1 minutes, and his efficiency dipped to 35.4% from the field and 20.9% from deep. Brooklyn’s answer was to send him somewhere he could play through mistakes and re-find his tou...

Ben Stiller slams White House for using ‘Tropic Thunder’ clip in war video

Ben Stiller blasted the White House for its use of a clip from his satirical action comedy “Tropic Thunder” in a video posted to promote the war in Iran. In addition to 2008’s “Tropic Thunder,” the social media supercut also included a series of movies and television shows, including “Braveheart,” “Breaking Bad,” “Top Gun,” “Superman,” “Transformers,” “Iron Man 2,” and “Star Wars” as well as footage of what appears to be United States military operations. “Justice the American way,” the caption reads. It was shared on Thursday, in wake of the United States’ and Israel’s joint launch of strikes against Iran. Stiller, who starred in “Tropic Thunder” alongside Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr., took immediate issue with its inclusion in the montage. He also wrote and directed the flick. “Hey White House, please remove the Tropic Thunder clip ,” he wrote on X. “We never gave you permission and have no interest in being a part of your propaganda machine,” he continued. “War is not a ...

Suspect in custody in Colorado in the case of 3 women found dead in Utah

By COLLEEN SLEVIN and SARAH BRUMFIELD and GEORGE FREY, Associated Press TORREY, Utah (AP) — A man who authorities accuse of killing a southern Utah woman, stealing her vehicle and driving it to a nearby trailhead and killing two women who were hiking together before fleeing in one of their vehicles has been arrested, officials announced Thursday. The series of events happened late Wednesday afternoon. Authorities were alerted to the killings by the husbands of the hikers who went to the trail near Capitol Reef National Park looking for them, said Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol. The husbands told authorities one vehicle was missing from the trailhead and they didn’t know who owned the other. Roden said authorities discovered the first woman who was killed after identifying the owner of the vehicle. There is no indication the suspect had any connection to the victims, he said. Investigators were still looking into when the suspect arrived in Utah and what he was doing p...

Another suspect admits guilt in jury bribery plot in boxer Goran Gogic’s NYC drug trafficking trial

Another man has admitted to his part in a scheme to bribe a juror in heavyweight boxer Goran Gogic’s international drug trafficking trial — just don’t ask him to identify his mobbed-up accomplice by name. Valmir Krasniqi, 35, the manager at Positano, a Bay Ridge restaurant prosecutors say has ties to organized crime figures, pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in Brooklyn Federal Court Wednesday, and could face up to six years behind bars based on sentencing guidelines. On Wednesday, Krasniqi admitted he gave a photo of one of the Gogic jurors to a worker at the restaurant, and that he set up a meeting in his home. But when Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Dean asked him to clarify who the meeting was with, his lawyer, Mathew Mari, insisted Krasniqi wouldn’t be naming names. “Judge, the defendant is not a cooperating witness,” Mari said. “He’s not saying that from his lips. He’s just not going to do it.” Krasniqi and two other men were arrested in November, accused of plotting ...

Fiifi Frimpong: WNBPA has its eyes on questionable prizes in CBA fight

The players are trying to fight a good fight, seeking a massive improvement to their unimaginably one-sided collective bargaining agreement. Public sentiment is largely on their side. But with the WNBA holding firm and time running out, it sounds like the players are folding — and that could mean another disappointing deal that’s projected for six more years. The WNBA presented a new CBA proposal to the WNBPA on Sunday, a source with knowledge of the information confirmed to the Daily News on Monday. The biggest takeaways from the proposal are changes that allow accelerated maximum contract eligibility for star players on rookie contracts and an increase in the Year 1 salary cap to $5.75 million. Based on league projections, the cap will grow to roughly $8.5 million by Year 6, according to the source. The league’s cap for the 2025 season was set at $1.5 million. The Associated Press was first on the details of the league’s latest proposal. “I want to play, and players want to pla...

Chet Hanks, stranded in Colombia, says ‘free me’

Chet Hanks says he’s stranded in Medellin , Colombia where he spent the weekend trying to resolve a passport issue. The 35-year-old son of Hollywood royals Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson told his 600,000 Instagram followers after celebrating a friend’s birthday in Puerto Rico, he decided to drop in on a friend in Colombia. According to Hanks – a dual-citizen traveling with his Greek passport — airport officials stopped him from re-entering the U.S. when he tried coming home. “They tell me that if I’m using a foreign passport, I need a green card to get back into America,” he says. “I don’t have a green card because I’m an American citizen.” Hanks said the issue could probably be resolved if he went to the U.S. embassy in Bogota, but he wasn’t interested in making that 250-mile trip. He said he left his U.S. passport at home because it’s about to expire, which he worried could be problematic. Rita Wilson and Chet Hanks attend the 68th GRAMMY Awards Pre-GRAMMY Gala. 3 US troops killed and 5 are seriously wounded during Iran attacks, military says

By BEN FINLEY WASHINGTON (AP) — Three American service members have been killed and five others seriously wounded during the U.S. attacks on Iran , the military said Sunday, marking the first American casualties in a major offensive that has sparked retaliation from the Islamic Republic . U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, announced the deaths in a post on X but did not say when and where they occurred. The statement said “several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions” and were going to return to duty. Central Command described the situation “as fluid” and said it would withhold the identities of the service members who were killed for 24 hours after their families were notified. The U.S. military also denied Iranian claims that the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier was struck with ballistic missiles, saying on X that the “missiles launched didn’t even come close.” President Donald Trump had warned that American troops could be killed or ...

For young Nets, Terance Mann provides the pro’s blueprint

Terance Mann doesn’t always show up the way fans are trained to look for it. Some nights it’s a big shot or a timely stop. Other nights it’s the quiet stuff that never makes a highlight package, the conversations on the bench, the reminder to take care of your body, the nudge to lock in when the role changes again. On a young Nets roster still learning how to be an NBA team every night, that version of Mann might be his most significant contribution. Brooklyn acquired Mann from the Atlanta Hawks in July, and he’s been exactly what the organization needed from a veteran wing on a rebuilding roster. He’s averaged 7.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 46.3% from the field and 36.9% from 3-point range. He’s also fifth on the team in total minutes at 1,263 and fifth in games started with 42 entering Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Barclays Center. Early in the season, as the rookie guards learned the ropes, Mann took on extra ball-handling responsi...

Mayor, New Yorkers bash Trump’s decision to bomb Iran; local electeds demand answers

Mayor Mamdani denounced President Trump’s massive bombardment of Iran on Saturday, calling it “a catastrophic escalation in an illegal war of aggression,” as other local elected officials demanded answers. “Americans do not want this. They do not want another war in pursuit of regime change. They want relief from the affordability crisis. They want peace,” he wrote in the statement on X. The mayor, who had what he called a “productive” meeting with Trump at the White House on Thursday, where he pitched to build 12,000 housing units in New York City, did not directly name the president in his remarks on Saturday. “I am focused on making sure that every New Yorker is safe,” Mamdani continued. “Additionally, I want to speak directly to Iranian New Yorkers: You are part of the fabric of this city — you are our neighbors, small business owners, students, artists, workers and community leaders. You will be safe here.” Scores of protesters were expected to gather in Times Square on Sat...

Robert Carradine ‘s cause and manner of death have been confirmed by the medical examiner less than a week after the “Lizzie McGuire” star died by suicide at 71.
