NJ police fatally shoot domestic violence suspect wielding baseball bat

A domestic violence suspect armed with a baseball bat was fatally shot by police officers outside a convenience store in New Jersey, the state Attorney General’s Office announced. The chaos kicked off on Thursday around 1 a.m., when authorities were called to a home on East Tappen Street in the Port Reading section of Woodbridge Township, just west of southern Staten Island. By the time officers arrived, however, a man identified as 35-year-old Aamir Allen, of Carteret, had fled from the scene on foot, eventually stopping at a nearby store on Port Reading Avenue, according to New Jersey A.G. Matthew J. Platkin. Allen was confronted a short time later in the parking lot by Woodbridge Police Sgt. Marco Bruno. The attorney general said Allen appeared to be holding a baseball bat at the time, prompting Bruno to discharge his service weapon. Police told ABC 7 that Bruno previously used the bat to bust the windows of an SUV parked outside the residence mentioned in the original 911 cal...

Deepest NBA draft classes in recent memory has significantly thinned out

Prospects had until Wednesday to withdraw their names from the 2025 NBA Draft. After numerous Top 60 players chose to return to college for the next season, one of the deepest draft classes in recent memory has significantly thinned out. The lottery remains packed with talent at the top, featuring players like Duke’s Cooper Flagg, Rutgers’ Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, Baylor’s VJ Edgecombe and Texas’ Tre Johnson. However, late-first and second-round prospects are withdrawing rapidly. “There’s an obvious reason for that: Expanding NIL money. While it was a factor in the past two drafts, this is the first one where the money has become huge enough that it radically alters the calculus for all but the top 15-20 picks. For anyone else, it would be extremely unwise to turn down a multi-million-dollar NIL check for the uncertainty of being a second-round pick in the NBA. Thus, the 2025 NBA Draft looks like a completely normal one at the top half of the first round, then has the bottom fal...

Joe Exotic pissed that Trump pardoned the Chrisleys, not him

“Tiger King” star Joe Exotic is peeved that President Trump pardoned his fellow reality stars Todd and Julie Chrisley while he remains behind bars. The 62-year-old Netflix star tweeted a screengrab of People’s article on Tuesday, detailing the president’s move and seeking his own pardon. “I guess being innocent is not enough in America. They all admitted to perjury on world television,” said Exotic, who added that he’s “left to die of cancer” as his appeal goes unanswered. Donald J. Ohio deputy fatally shot responding to domestic violence call, suspect wounded

An Ohio sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence incident by a suspect who was also wounded in the Memorial Day gunfire exchange, according to authorities. Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton on Tuesday identified the fallen officer as 31-year-old Daniel Weston Sherrer , whom he described as a “godsend” for the community and his fellow deputies. “Always had a smile on his face . Never in a bad mood,” Hinton said of Sherrer. “He came to work every day. He loved this community . He loved the job.” Sherrer was responding to a domestic violence situation at a home on the 100 block of County Road 26 in Marengo when he was shot Monday evening, according to the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. He was struck by gunfire shortly after his arrival and rushed to a local hospital, where he died a short time later. The suspect was also shot during the confrontation and remains hospitalized in critical condition, Hinton said. He refused to identify the gunman durin...

Connecticut cops report extra busy Memorial Day weekend of crashes, DUIs

Connecticut State Police responded to more than 5,000 calls during a Memorial Day weekend that included 36 DUI arrests, 1,347 traffic stops and 271 motor vehicle crashes resulting in a pair of fatalities. Those numbers reported by authorities Tuesday reflect a steep increase from 2024 , when cops answered just under 4,000 calls for service, made only 20 DUI arrests and reported no deaths from crashes over the three-day weekend. Police said last week they intended to increase patrols for the holiday period that unofficially kicks off summertime, according to New Haven station WTNH. The state’s Department of Transportation warned before the weekend that, for teenage drivers, the “ 100 deadliest days ” between Memorial Day and Labor Day require particular caution. The number of teens killed nationally during that period in 2023 was nearly 35% higher than in the 2019 pre-pandemic, according to officials. Connecticut State Police identified one of the victims killed in the state over ...

Schumer says Dems will vote to kill Trump’s ‘handout to billionaires’ budget

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats will vote unanimously to stop President Trump’s “ One, Big, Beautiful, Bill ,” which narrowly made it through the House of Representatives last Thursday. “This is not beautiful. This bill is downright ugly— a job killer, a price raiser, a care slasher, and massive pile on to the national debt,” Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement sent to the Daily News on Monday. Democrats were unable to block the bill in the lower chamber last week when an overnight session ended in a 215-to-214 vote in support of the president’s 1,000-page-plus legislative package to advance his economic agenda. The GOP is pushing to extend $4.5 trillion in tax breaks they worked on with Trump in his first term as well as adding new cuts. Among Trump’s 2024 campaign promises was a vow to make service industry gratuities and overtime pay nontaxable. Schumer dismissed the bill as a “ handout to billionaires ,” which he claimed will lead to as many as 14 millio...

Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton (elbow injuries) getting closer to making season debut

The Yankees are close to getting their postseason hero back in the lineup. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman provided an encouraging update on Giancarlo Stanton , who is recovering from tennis elbow in both elbows. “Stanton has been doing everything,” Cashman said on MLB Network Radio.  “He’s kind of completed his base running now. He’s been hitting for a long time with that tremendous BP machine we have, so he’s been getting live at-bats. He’s scheduled for live BP for the next two weeks and I think he’s getting really close to doing a rehab assignment thereafter.” The 35-year-old hasn’t played since his postseason tear for the 2024 American League Champions. Stanton’s return will cause some uncomfortable conversations as the Bombers have one too many bats with not enough spots to put them. Aaron Boone is already rotating three outfielders in two spots with Cody Bellinger, Jasson Dominugez and Trent Grisham. Now, the Yanks will have two DH’s in Ben Rice and the returning ...

Kristian Winfield: Why Delon Wright minutes could save Knicks championship hopes

INDIANAPOLIS — The Knicks outscored opponents at a staggering rate of 54.5 points per 100 possessions in the 13 minutes Delon Wright and Miles McBride shared the floor together across five regular-season games — a small sample size, yes, but a telling one. When Wright shared the court with Mitchell Robinson, the Knicks posted a plus-13.9 net rating. With Mikal Bridges, plus-7.1. With OG Anunoby, plus-4.1. And when injuries forced Wright into the starting lineup at point guard, New York went 4-1 — despite being without Jalen Brunson, Cameron Payne, and McBride, all sidelined due to injury. Which is what makes his absence from the Eastern Conference Finals rotation all the more glaring — especially for a team that has collapsed defensively, unraveled on the perimeter, and suddenly finds its championship push hanging by a thread. If head coach Tom Thibodeau trusted Wright to come in cold and guard his yard on the Knicks’ final defensive possession in the third quarter of Game 1, th...

Dramatic bodycam video shows fatal traffic stop shootout that wounded 2 Va. cops

Newly released bodycam footage shows a dramatic traffic stop in Virginia that ended with two officers wounded and a gunman dead. The wild encounter occurred on April 23, when officers from the Fair Oaks District station pulled over a man driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla. As soon as one of the officers walks toward the vehicle, the driver, later identified as 36-year-old Jamal Wali, says he had a gun. “I am armed, I’ll let you know,” Wali tells the officer, before asking him why he had been pulled over. When the cop tells him he was driving with an expired safety inspection sticker, he says that he’s aware. “Call Joe Biden or call George Bush,” Wali responds, visibly upset. He also says he doesn’t have a driver’s license before telling the officer to “go back, sit in the f–ing car and leave.” After a few minutes of a heated exchange, Wali is seen in the video reaching for his firearm and opening fire. He fired a single bullet that went through the biceps of one of the officers a...

The incident — next to a West Harlem sewage-treatment plant — was linked to “hot work,” possibly welding, aboard a city Department of Environmental Protection-owned vessel named the Hunts Point, according to the U.S. Coast Guard and cops. Power outage at Cannes Film Festival caused by deliberate acts of sabotage, police say

Deliberate acts of sabotage left much of southeastern France without power on the final day of the glamorous Cannes Film Festival, sparking an arson investigation ahead of closing celebrations, including the much-anticipated Palme d’Or ceremony. Some 160,000 homes in the Alpes-Maritimes region, which includes Cannes, were affected by the sweeping blackout on Saturday , which dragged on for several hours and threatened to jeopardize the events before power was eventually restored, according to RTE, France’s electrical grid operator. Some beachfront speakers boomed to life around 3 p.m. local time. The music, signaling the end of the outage, elicited cheers from frustrated locals. Before that, The Palais des Festivals — the film fest’s main venue — was left without power, forcing organizers to delay several screenings and make use of generators. Traffic lights in parts of Cannes stopped working, leading to jams and confusion, and most of the shops along the Croisette had to clo...

NYC mom who may die from Randalls Island beatdown spent 6 hours on ground unconscious

The Queens single mom clinging to life after being savagely beaten and robbed of her e-bike on Randalls Island was left unconscious on the ground for nearly six hours before she was discovered by a passerby the next morning, the Daily News has learned. Diana Agudelo was biking home from her job as a janitor at an East Harlem museum, taking her usual short cut through Randalls Island to get to her Astoria apartment, when she was attacked about 11:30 p.m. Friday. One or more assailants struck her multiple times in the head and face before apparently stealing her e-bike and belongings. A passerby didn’t spot her unconscious near the bike path until about 5:15 a.m. the next day as the sky began to lighten on the sparsely populated island, which is home to sports fields and institutions including shelters, a psychiatric hospital and an FDNY training facility. Agudelo made it through surgery Wednesday to relieve pressure on her brain but only has a 1% chance of ultimately surviving, ...
