An Ohio sheriff’s deputy was fatally shot while responding to a domestic violence incident by a suspect who was also wounded in the Memorial Day gunfire exchange, according to authorities.
Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton on Tuesday identified the fallen officer as 31-year-old Daniel Weston Sherrer, whom he described as a “godsend” for the community and his fellow deputies.
“Always had a smile on his face. Never in a bad mood,” Hinton said of Sherrer. “He came to work every day. He loved this community. He loved the job.”
Sherrer was responding to a domestic violence situation at a home on the 100 block of County Road 26 in Marengo when he was shot Monday evening, according to the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. He was struck by gunfire shortly after his arrival and rushed to a local hospital, where he died a short time later.
The suspect was also shot during the confrontation and remains hospitalized in critical condition, Hinton said. He refused to identify the gunman during a press conference held in the wake of the shooting.
“You will never hear his name come from my lips, so if you want the name you will have to get it some other way, I’m not giving it to you,” he told reporters. ”Why would I? He doesn’t deserve it.”
Few other details have been provided about the deadly incident, which remains under investigation by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office and the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Sherrer, who is “survived by his parents and numerous loved ones,” had served with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office since May 2021.
