Connecticut State Police responded to more than 5,000 calls during a Memorial Day weekend that included 36 DUI arrests, 1,347 traffic stops and 271 motor vehicle crashes resulting in a pair of fatalities.
Those numbers reported by authorities Tuesday reflect a steep increase from 2024, when cops answered just under 4,000 calls for service, made only 20 DUI arrests and reported no deaths from crashes over the three-day weekend.
Police said last week they intended to increase patrols for the holiday period that unofficially kicks off summertime, according to New Haven station WTNH.
The state’s Department of Transportation warned before the weekend that, for teenage drivers, the “100 deadliest days” between Memorial Day and Labor Day require particular caution. The number of teens killed nationally during that period in 2023 was nearly 35% higher than in the 2019 pre-pandemic, according to officials.
Connecticut State Police identified one of the victims killed in the state over the weekend as 21-year-old motorcyclist Tyler West, who collided with a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder pulling out of a driveway in Tolland on Monday.
The other holiday weekend fatality in Connecticut occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sunday when 55-year-old Everaldo Ferreira De Oliveira of Waterbury struck an Exit 23 ramp guardrail, according to law enforcement.
