2 Conn. officers shot while serving warrant; suspect fatally shot

A pair of Connecticut police officers executing a search warrant in New Haven were shot and wounded by a suspect, who was also killed in the exchange of gunfire, police said. The two officers, with the West Haven Police Department, were working as part of a task force — comprising law enforcement from several different agencies — when the violence broke out on Wednesday at an apartment building on the 700 block of Grand Avenue, WTNH reported. They were both hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries , police said. New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson told reporters the situation escalated shortly after authorities arrived on the scene just after 5:30 a.m. He said the first officer was shot as he entered the building, prompting multiple exchanges of gunfire that quickly escalated into a “standoff-type” incident. When the gunfire seemed to stop, officers tried to coax the suspect from the building, but they did not receive any response, Jacobson said. The shooter was found fa...

Deportation flights from the US to Colombia resume after diplomatic spat

By MANUEL RUEDA, MARKO ALVAREZ and ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON, Associated Press BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombian migrants returning home Tuesday on Colombian military flights described being shackled during earlier U.S. flights that were blocked by their country’s leader in a dispute with President Donald Trump that nearly sparked  a trade war . Deportation flights  between the U.S. and Colombia resumed Tuesday after the diplomatic drama over the weekend that provided clues as to how  the Trump administration  would deal with countries blocking large-scale plans to deport migrants who entered illegally. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro initially refused to accept two U.S. military planes with migrants, prompting  Trump  to threaten 25% tariffs on Colombian exports and other sanctions. Colombia then relented and said it would accept the migrants, but fly them on Colombian military flights that Petro said would guarantee them dignity. Two Colombian air force ...

Super Bowl LIX storylines include Chiefs’ chase for three-peat, rematch with Eagles, and Taylor Swift

Patrick Mahomes . Saquon Barkley . Travis Kelce . Even Taylor Swift . If the big names in the Big Easy aren’t reason enough to get excited for Super Bowl LIX, there is no shortage of storylines that make this year’s championship bout between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles especially compelling. Mahomes and his history-seeking Chiefs have become the NFL’s biggest villains, with a sizable segment of fans praying that someone — anyone! — can finally end their dynasty. But the love-em-or-hate-em Eagles, long among the NFL’s most polarizing teams, aren’t exactly an easy bandwagon to jump on, and their infighting this season prompted speculation about how much they even like each other. Two years ago, the first Super Bowl meeting between the Chiefs and Eagles delivered an instant classic. With the Chiefs opening as 1.5-point favorites, this year’s big game has a chance to be similarly epic. Here are the biggest storylines going into Super Bowl LIX at New Orleans’ Caesa...

Mobbed-up Long Island cop staged fake raid at rival ‘Sal the Shoemaker’ gambling parlor: feds

A mobbed-up Nassau cop working behind-the-scenes for the Bonanno crime family staged a fake raid to shut down a gambling parlor run by rival Genovese gangster Salvatore “Sal the Shoemaker” Rubino, federal prosecutors charge in new court filings. Now-fired Nassau County Police Department Detective Hector Rosario allegedly had a side gig working for the Bonanno crime family — and the Bonannos considered Rubino’s gambling den in his Merrick, L.I. shop, Sal’s Shoe Repair, the competition, the feds say. So in 2013 or 2014, two Bonanno members paid Rosario to shut the place down and Rosario got to work, according to a January filing by federal prosecutors. The two Bonannos who gave the order are expected to sing at Rosario’s trial in Brooklyn Federal Court next month. Neither are named in the court filings. One of the informants, a Bonanno associate, is expected to testify he was in the room when Rosario and his “associates” barged into Rubino’s shoe repair shop, broke one of the gamb...

By THOMAS BEAUMONT, Associated Press Pete Hegseth  was sworn in Saturday as the nation’s 29th secretary of defense, quickly joining President Trump’s Cabinet after a dramatic late-night vote in the Senate installed him as the Pentagon’s leader. Hegseth took the oath from Vice President JD Vance in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building with Hegseth’s wife, Jennifer Rauchet, at his side and Republican senators looking on. The ceremony came less than 12 hours after Vance broke a 50-50 tie in the Senate to narrowly seal Hegseth’s confirmation. In brief remarks, Hegseth outlined what he said were his guiding principles: “Restore the warrior ethos in everything that we do, rebuild our military and reestablish deterrence.” “We don’t want to fight wars,” he added. “We want to deter them … and we want to end them responsibly.
