A Long Island woman has been arrested and charged with a deadly hit-and-run crash that killed a grandfather in early November, police announced Tuesday.
Heidy Zelaya Almendarez, a 24-year-old Wyandanch resident, was arraigned Monday for the wreck, Nassau County police said in an alert.
Octavio Dejesus Espinal Sime, a 76-year-old West Babylon man, was killed in the Nov. 8 crash in Freeport, according to police. Espinal Sime was walking across the street when he was hit by a light-colored sedan, which fled the scene, cops said.
Investigators said Zelaya Almendarez was captured on surveillance video hiding her car in her backyard after the crash, News 12 Long Island reported. Prosecutors did not provide more details about the car’s make and model.
Zelaya Almendarez was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting with a fatality and tampering with physical evidence. She posted $75,000 cash bail following her arraignment, according to News 12.
Espinal Sime was initially transported from the crash scene at North Grove Street and Brooklyn Avenue with critical injuries, but he was declared brain dead a few days later. Police announced his death on Nov. 20.
He had been walking to the Freeport Long Island Rail Road station after a day of work when he was killed, according to his family. Espinal Sime was an organ donor, and his liver helped save a man’s life in Texas, Newsday reported.
