Freezing rain, ice threaten North Jersey and Hudson Valley, NYC to get mostly rain

Freezing rain and small accumulations of ice could hit northern parts of New Jersey and the southern Hudson Valley on Sunday night, meteorologists said. The new winter weather threat followed several inches of snow that fell from Friday night into Saturday morning. Though the snowstorm blanketed the five boroughs , temperatures in New York City are expected to remain high enough Sunday to avoid wintery conditions. “Temperatures along the immediate coast, including the NYC metro, are expected to inch just above freezing,” National Weather Service forecasters wrote Sunday. “When rain develops just after dark, [precipitation] here is expected to be mainly rain at onset.” But north and northwest of the city, temperatures will be cold enough to create freezing rain and small amounts of ice, according to the National Weather Service. The highest chance of ice was in Orange and Putnam counties in New York, Warren and Morris counties in New Jersey and Fairfield and New Haven counties in ...

Second actor sues Tyler Perry for sexual assault, seeking $77M

Tyler Perry is being sued for $77 million for sexual assault by an actor who appeared in “Boo! A Madea Halloween,” marking the second lawsuit this year accusing the filmmaking mogul of leveraging his power in Hollywood to take advantage of young hopefuls. Model and actor Mario Rodriguez filed the lawsuit on Christmas Day in California, alleging the billionaire subjected him to years of unwanted advances, including sexual battery and assault at Perry’s Los Angeles home. The suit also names Lionsgate Films , which distributed “A Madea Halloween,” claiming the studio knew of Perry’s alleged misconduct and turned a blind eye. Perry, 56, has denied the accusations through his lawyer, Alex Spiro, who described the latest filing in a statement to the Daily News as a yet another “money grab” that will “fail.” Rodriguez was credited as Frat Guy #10 in Perry’s 2016 film, the year after he says he met the mega-producer. According to the lawsuit, Rodriguez claims he was first approached by a...

Woman, 73, pummeled by stranger in Harlem subway elevator in argument over attacker’s child

A 73-year-old woman was viciously beaten by a stranger in a Harlem subway station elevator after the victim complained that the attacker’s young daughter was touching her, police said Saturday. Cops have released an image of the menacing mother in the hopes that someone recognizes her. The victim told police she was taking the elevator at the 125th St. stop at Lexington Ave. at around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 3, when the woman and her young daughter stepped in. During the ride, the victim said that the small girl was touching her, sparking an argument with the mother, cops were told. As the confrontation heated up, the mom began repeatedly punching the victim in the face before she and her daughter ran out of the elevator. The two were last seen jumping on a Lower Manhattan-bound train on the No. 4/5/6 line , cops said. The bruised victim called police, but refused medical attention. Cops recovered surveillance images of the woman at the MTA station and released the footage, asking the...

The 10 best Broadway shows of 2025

Feuding families. Tragic quests. Dead bodies. George Clooney and Sarah Snook. Broadway had plenty of variety on offer this past year. Here is our annual list — daringly ranked in order — of the top ten Broadway shows of 2025. 1. Purpose Nobody but Branden Jacobs-Jenkins could have written “ Purpose ,” a dynamic new drama about a Chicago family of civil rights leaders and a fine, fresh-eyed showcase for the famed actors of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Here was a play that took no prisoners as it explored the universal experience of trying to live up to the accomplishments of your parents while also avoiding falling into their blind spots and being unable to climb out. And in a rough year for Broadway investors all over the rialto, this one also found its audience. 2. Oedipus Mark Strong with Samuel Brewer in "Oedipus." Iconic Silver Gull Beach Club in Queens partially destroyed by raging fire

A raging fire tore through the iconic Silver Gull Beach Club in Queens, causing massive damage, officials said Thursday. The fire broke out about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at the long-standing summertime haunt on Beach 193rd St. and Rockaway Point Blvd. in Breezy Point, FDNY officials said. It quickly escalated to three alarms amid concerns that the structure could collapse. The private club opened in 1963. It consists of 457 cabanas, which the New York Times described in 2016 as “like large walk-in closets that serve as miniature beach houses,” often decorated elaborately by members who pass them on to their children. Day passes are also available. A fire tears through the Silver Gull Beach Club on Beach 193rd St. and Rockaway Point Blvd. in Breezy Point, Queens, on Wednesday. Christmas Eve jazz show canceled over Kennedy Center name change

Drummer Chuck Redd said he canceled the Christmas Eve show he’s been performing for nearly 20 years at the Kennedy Center after President Trump added his own name to the building that serves as a living memorial to assassinated President John. F. Kennedy. “When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert,” the jazz percussionist said. Trump’s handpicked board voted to add the 47th President’s name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Friday. The building’s facade was soon after altered to reflect the renaming, though the legality of that process remains in question. Redd began leading the holiday “Jazz Jams” in Washington, D.C. in 2006. Why the NBA’s renewed anti-tanking push matters for the Nets

The NBA is once again taking a hard look at tanking, and the timing is no coincidence. As the league continues to deal with the fallout from a gambling scandal that exposed how injury information and late-season lineup decisions can be exploited, officials have begun exploring new ways to remove the incentive to lose on purpose. The focus isn’t on rebuilding teams as a whole, but on the gray areas that allow competitive integrity to erode late in the season, particularly when draft positioning and protected picks come into play. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania , the league recently gathered input from owners and general managers at a Board of Governors meeting, presenting several early-stage ideas tied to the draft lottery, traded pick protections and late-season incentives. No proposals have been formally adopted, but the goal, per Charania, is to discourage teams from manipulating availability or outcomes once draft math starts to outweigh on-court priorities. That context mat...

Trump removes nearly 30 career diplomats from ambassadorial positions

By MATTHEW LEE, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is recalling nearly 30 career diplomats from ambassadorial and other senior embassy posts as it moves to reshape the U.S. diplomatic posture abroad with personnel deemed fully supportive of President Donald Trump’s “America First” priorities. The chiefs of mission in at least 29 countries were informed last week that their tenures would end in January, according to two State Department officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal personnel moves. All of them had taken up their posts in the Biden administration but had survived an initial purge in the early months of Trump’s second term that targeted mainly political appointees. That changed on Wednesday when they began to receive notices from officials in Washington about their imminent departures. Ambassadors serve at the pleasure of the president although they typically remain at their posts for three to four years. Those affected b...

Giants still can earn No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick after Vikings deal them ninth straight loss

The No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft is still in play. The Giants lost their ninth straight on Sunday, 16-13, to a shorthanded Minnesota Vikings team that had flight complications on Saturday and played backup quarterback Max Brosmer for half of the game. Interim head coach Mike Kafka had no idea how to protect Jaxson Dart from Brian Flores’ aggressive and complicated defense. Dart didn’t complete a pass until 1:44 remaining in the second quarter. The Giants (2-13) finished with 141 total yards of offense and 13 net yards passing. And they did not score a touchdown on offense. Their only points came on a 27-yard fumble return by Tyler Nubin late in the first half after a Brian Burns strip sack. The Giants have two games remaining against the Raiders and Cowboys. If they lose both, they can land the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft. GM Joe Schoen now has a 3-24 record (.111) in the Giants’ last 27 games, a 5-27 record (.156) in the last 32 games, a 5-18-1 record (....

Luigi Mangione’s lawyers say AG Bondi’s ‘conflict of interest’ fueled death penalty decision

Lawyers for Luigi Mangione are arguing that Attorney General Pam Bondi has a conflict of interest in the case, claiming her distant ties to the victim, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson , could be fueling her fight for the death penalty . Bondi was previously a partner at Ballard Partners, a firm that represented UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, UnitedHealth Group. Mangione’s attorneys contend that her work created a “profound conflict of interest” that violated their client’s due process rights, according to court documents filed late Friday as part of a renewed effort to block the death penalty and to get several charges in the case tossed.
