A man was fatally shot by police after authorities said he brandished a knife inside the St. Louis Lambert International Airport in Missouri on Friday.
The incident unfolded outside the doors of Terminal 1 as airport police conducted routine security checks, Louis County Police spokesperson Vera Clay said. The area is located near the light rail line that transports travelers to the terminal and isn’t behind a security checkpoint.
Around 1:05 a.m., officers encountered an unidentified man with a knife.
Clay said he initially drew authorities’ attention because he was in a spot he should not have been at the time. When officers tried to get him to move, the man allegedly pulled out a weapon, prompting them to deploy their tasers.
Despite their efforts, Clay said, the man continued to advance toward the officers, and one of them fired their gun, striking the suspect.
He was pronounced dead on the scene.
“We don’t believe this was an individual trying to catch an airplane or coming into town,” Clay said.
No other injuries were reported, but the rail line to Terminal 1 was briefly closed, with shuttles taking people from other drop-off points. It was operating normally as of early Friday afternoon.
The two officers involved in the incident have not been named, but they have been a part of the airport’s police department for six months and one year, respectively, police said. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.
