A 10-year-old boy and 21-year-old woman were killed in a mass shooting on a Newark street, authorities said Sunday.
An 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man and a 60-year-old man were wounded but survived the spray of bullets 7 p.m. Saturday, WCBS reported. The wounded victims were in stable condition at a local hospital, police said.
The names of the victims who died were not immediately released.
No suspects have been named or arrested in the case. Authorities said they were searching for the shooter or shooters on Sunday.
“There is no explanation on Earth that could come close to justifying this shooting,” Mayor Ras Baraka told NJ.com. “This is a vivid reminder that there is so much more work we must do. No one is exempt from doing their part to help and heal one another.”
Numerous shots rang out on Chancellor Ave., WABC reported. At least 17 evidence markers could be seen on the ground Sunday.
The Essex County prosecutor’s office is offering a $10,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest in the case. Newark officials emphasized that violent crime was down in the city this year prior to Saturday night’s deadly attack.
“Please pray for the victims and their families,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy wrote on social media.
