Gun-toting attacker opens fire on Michigan church, killed by security guard

An armed man opened fire on a suburban Detroit church Sunday morning before he was hit with a car and fatally shot by a security guard, officials said.

The unidentified attacker fired numerous bullets toward CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, police said. A church deacon ran him over with a Ford F-150 pickup truck, senior pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. told The Detroit News.

A church security guard then fatally shot the attacker, Kelly said. One person was injured in the mayhem; that person has not been publicly identified.

“Upon arrival, officers determined that a security guard for the church shot and killed the suspect,” Wayne police wrote on Facebook “One victim was shot in the leg. Please avoid the area. Officers are still actively investigating.”

The shooter first opened fire around 11 a.m. at the church about 15 miles west of downtown Detroit, near the city’s airport, police said.

Inside the church, about 150 people had gathered for a special vacation Bible school service, Kelly told The Detroit News. No one inside the building was injured in the attack, even though several bullets struck the church.

“He was run over by one of our members who saw this happening when he was coming into church,” Kelly told the paper.

Any potential motive for the attack or any details of the shooter’s identity were not immediately released by police.
