Trump gets thumbs down in polls as he marks first 100 days

President Trump is getting a big thumbs down from Americans in polls on some of his controversial key proposals as he marks 100 days back in the White House. Outsized majorities of Americans told a new ABC News/Washington Post survey released Tuesday that they do not support Trump’s controversial plans to annex Canada and Greenland or to attempt a run for a third term in the White House in 2028. A whopping 86% of those surveyed oppose the United States trying to take control of Canada , which Trump has repeatedly vowed will become the 51st state. A somewhat smaller total of 76% oppose gobbling up Greenland , the vast, mineral-rich Arctic island that is a self-governing territory of Denmark. Support for the annexations are mostly limited to Republicans, with nearly half of self-identified GOP voters backing taking over Greenland . Only a tiny 3% of Democrats and 20% of independents agree. When it comes to Canada, just 27% of Republicans want the north-of-the-border neighbor to b...

Hegseth boasts about ending ‘woke’ program on women and security that Trump had signed into law

By TARA COPP and FARNOUSH AMIRI WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth boasted on social media Tuesday that he had dismantled a program supporting women on security teams — and may not have realized the program he tried to break was not a “woke” Biden-era initiative but instead a celebrated program signed into law by his boss, President Donald Trump. Hegseth in an agitated post on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, called the “Women, Peace & Security” program at the Department of Defense “a UNITED NATIONS program pushed by feminists and left-wing activists. Politicians fawn over it; troops HATE it.” It was, in fact, bipartisan legislation that Trump signed into law in 2017 that recognized the role women have in achieving security objectives, especially in situations overseas where their male counterparts may not for cultural reasons be able to question or would not for religious regions have direct access to women. Trump’s own Cabinet officials supported the pro...

A pregnant woman in Gaza’s ruins fears for her baby under Israel’s blockade

By SARAH EL DEEB, MOHAMMED JAHJOUH and LEE KEATH KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — Nearly seven months pregnant, Yasmine Siam couldn’t sleep, living in a crowded tent camp in Gaza and shaken often by Israeli bombardment. She couldn’t find proper food and hadn’t eaten meat for more than a month. Weak and losing weight, she saw doctors every day. There was little they could do. One night this month, pain shot through her. She worried labor was starting but was too terrified of gunfire to leave her tent. Siam waited till daybreak to walk to the nearest mobile clinic. The medics told her to go to Nasser Hospital, miles away. She had to take a donkey cart, jolted by every bump in the bombed-out roads. Exhausted, the 24-year-old found a wall to lean on for the hourslong wait for a doctor. An ultrasound showed her baby was fine. Siam had a urinary tract infection and was underweight: 57 kilos (125 pounds), down 6 kilos (13 pounds) from weeks earlier. The doctor prescribed medicine and tol...

Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. off the hook for tweet-related suspension: source

If his unimpeded presence in the Yankees ’ lineup had not made it clear already, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is no longer facing a one-game suspension for the mid-game, post-ejection tweet he sent on April 17. Chisholm made it clear that he planned to appeal that suspension after Major League Baseball announced it on April 18 . As part of the appeal process, he had a meeting planned for this past Thursday. But Chisholm told the Daily News that he never participated in such a meeting. “They were just like, ‘There’s no suspension guys,’” the second baseman said Sunday morning. “I think they talked to my agent. “I don’t know. You’re literally asking the worst person.” Asked for clarification, Chisholm’s agent did not immediately respond. However, a league source told The News that there was an appeal hearing scheduled for Thursday, but Chisholm and MLB reached a settlement agreement. That arrangement ended the appeal process, rescinded the suspension, and maintained a $5,000 fine, which was p...

Not tough? Not true: Knicks proving they can still bring the fight

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. — The Pistons are known as one of the NBA’s toughest teams. That doesn’t mean the Knicks are Charmin soft. In fact, they believe the opposite. Contrary to what’s said on social media or national television, the Knicks like to play physical. They don’t mind mixing it up. And just because they don’t have a textbook enforcer doesn’t mean they’re backing down from any fight. “That’s one thing about us,” Josh Hart said after practice at Seaholm High School on Saturday, pausing with a chuckle. “I think we all like physicality, and we thrive in those kind of games and situations.” Toughness became a major question after an action-packed offseason reshaped the Knicks’ roster — and their identity. Gone were Isaiah Hartenstein (to the Oklahoma City Thunder), Julius Randle, and Donte DiVincenzo (both traded to Minnesota for Karl-Anthony Towns ). All three were known for their edge, their willingness to get in opponents’ faces. In their place: a new cast, a new chemistry — a...

Purdue’s Marcus Mbow becomes Giants’ first O-Line draft pick since 2023

Joe Schoen drafted an offensive lineman on Saturday for the first time since 2023: Purdue’s Marcus Mbow . The Giants ‘ 6-4, 303-pounder slipped down the board due to some teams’ medical concerns. He played only six games for the Boilermakers in 2023 due to a broken right leg. But Mbow (pronounced “Bo”) returned as a 2024 Honorable Mention All-Big 10 selection while playing in 12 games as a junior, before leaving school a year early. He has played both right tackle (18 games) and right guard (14) in college, so he has position versatility. And he has a mean streak that could benefit the Giants’ front. “Putting people on the ground, winning reps, demoralizing people, it’s always fun,” Mbow said on a conference call. “It’s definitely part of the reason I love the game.” Mbo is Schoen’s first offensive line draft pick since the Giants selected center John Michael Schmitz No. 57 overall in the 2023 draft’s second round. The Giants GM insisted this offseason that the team’s existi...

Georgia WR Arian Smith, Alabama safety Malachi Moore headline Jets draft selections on Day 3

Jets fans have been clamoring for the team to draft a wide receiver in this year’s draft. Finally, in Round 4, Gang Green added a pass-catching weapon for quarterback Justin Fields . At pick 110 overall, the Jets selected Georgia wide receiver Arian Smith , who led the team in receiving yards a season ago. Smith was sitting on the couch with his family when the Jets called and told him they were selecting him in the fourth round. “I’m just feeling a lot of emotions,” Smith said. “It has been a long 48 hours. I felt the phone vibrating and I seen it was for the Jets and the call was from New York and my heart sank to the floor. “They asked me if I’m ready to be Jet and get to work. … I just told them, ‘Yeah, I’m ready, and I appreciate them, and I’m honored and blessed that they called me and gave me an opportunity.'” Smith said he spoke with the Jets many times during the pre-draft process, including a Zoom interview and a Top 30 visit. Smith was one of the fastest receiver...

Browns draft Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders in fifth round after shocking slide

Shedeur Sanders ’ stunning slide finally came to an end. Once considered a candidate to be the first overall pick, the Colorado quarterback fell all the way to No. 144 before the Cleveland Browns took him Saturday in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Cleveland traded up to do so, sending the No. 166 and No. 192 picks to the Seattle Seahawks to land the most polarizing prospect in this year’s draft class. “Thank you GOD,” Sanders, who did not attend the draft in Green Bay, Wisc., wrote on social media shortly after his name was called. Sanders, the high-profile son of Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders, was the sixth quarterback to come off the board — and the second drafted by the Browns, who selected Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel two rounds earlier. The Browns passed on Sanders six times before they moved up 22 slots to take him with the sixth pick of the fifth round. That ended a furious freefall that nobody could have predicted. Entering the offseason, debates raged over...

Pope Francis’ funeral: Where to stream and what to expect

The world will bid a final farewell this weekend to Pope Francis, who leaves behind a legacy shaped by his efforts to revitalize the Church—from addressing clerical abuse to expanding dialogue around climate change, migration, and inclusion. The Argentine pontiff died at the age of 88 on Monday from a stroke that resulted in a coma and irreversible heart failure, according to the Vatican’s top doctors. It came after Francis —who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed when he was younger — was admitted to Gemelli hospital on February 14, for a respiratory crisis that evolved into double pneumonia. He spent a total of 38 days there before he was released to recover in his apartment, and he made his final public appearance on Easter Sunday, delivering a blessing and greeting followers from his popemobile as he looped around St. Peter’s Square. Until his funeral this weekend, Francis’ body, adorned in his papal vestments, will lie in state at St. Peter’s...

Long Island man, 83, arrested for damaging Teslas in parking lot

An elderly Long Island man was arrested and accused of vandalizing five Teslas in a mall parking lot in Nassau County, police said Wednesday. Victor Divergilio , 83, took a sharp object and made deep scratches on the five vehicles Sunday at Roosevelt Field mall in Garden City, Nassau County police said in an alert. The damage was estimated at $23,000, and Divergilio was charged with second-degree criminal mischief , a felony. His arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday. Several car dealerships store vehicles at Roosevelt Field because of its large parking areas, according to Newsday. The damaged Teslas belonged to a dealership in Waterbury, Conn. Cops did not publicly speculate on a motive for Divergilio’s actions, but dozens of Teslas have been targeted in similar actions throughout North America after Elon Musk took a prominent role in President Trump’s administration and began wantonly firing government workers. Tina Knowles reveals breast cancer diagnosis after missed mammogram

Tina Knowles is revealing how she navigated a secret breast cancer journey. The “Matriarch” author shared that she was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer in her left breast last July, shortly after she and her daughter Beyonce launched their haircare line Cecred. Though the mother of two initially kept the news “private,” she now wants to warn women that “It’s important not to slack on your mammograms.” “I struggled with whether I would share that journey because I’m very private. But I decided to share it because I think it’s a lot of lessons in it for other women,” she told People . “And I think as women, sometimes we get so busy and we get so wrapped up and running around, but you must go get your test.
