Mike Lupica: Mets’ Steve Cohen learning that money can’t buy a World Series, or a healthy roster

You still can’t buy a World Series championship in baseball, as hard as teams like the Dodgers and Mets and Yankees and Phillies and even the Red Sox, when they were still spending big, keep trying. Fact is that over the past 10 years, only two teams with the largest payroll in the land — ’18 Red Sox, ’20 Dodgers — have won it all. Even last season, the Dodgers only had the third-largest payroll on the books, after the Yankees and Mets. Of course Steve Cohen is in there swinging away with his wallet, as Mets fans can see. But they also see that despite having the largest payrolls in the sport in 2023 and ’24 and having the second-largest as the ’25 regular season is about to begin, according to Spotrac’s numbers, the Mets still haven’t won the Series in nearly 40 years, even coming up just two wins shy of making the Series a year ago. Over the past decade, we’ve seen the Astros win two Series, one with only the 17th priciest payroll and another time with the 8th. We’ve seen the Nat...

WaPo opinion editor David Shipley out as Bezos forges new editorial direction

The Washington Post is looking for a new opinion editor to advance billionaire owner Jeff Bezos’s plan to focus the section on “ free markets and personal liberties .” Bezos sent a letter to employees Wednesday detailing his new plan for the Pulitzer Prize winning publication he’s owned since 2013. He shared that note with the public on fellow billionaire Elon Musk ‘s social media platform X. “We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets,” the Amazon founder wrote. “We’ll cover other topics too of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others.” Bezos said he offered to allow current opinion section director David Shipley to stay on board if he agreed to the paper’s new agenda. Since Shipley’s answer wasn’t an enthusiastic “hell yes” it was time for him to ship out, according to Bezos. Bezos stated that he’s “excited” to fill the void left by Shipley’s departure. Hoboken PATH station reopens after 25-day closure

The Hoboken PATH station reopened at 5 a.m. Tuesday after shutting down for 25 days for massive repairs. About 20,000 daily riders were forced to alter their commutes beginning Jan. 31, while workers made significant track replacements and upgraded the station itself. “We welcome riders back to a revitalized Hoboken station , where the closure has enabled a huge amount of refurbishment,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said. “We appreciate the patience and flexibility that our riders have shown during this closure.” Hoboken PATH riders were treated to free rides Tuesday morning as a token of appreciation, the Port Authority said. The project involved laying 4,500 feet of new track leading into Hoboken station, along with replacing tracks, switches and signals for the intricate Hoboken Interlocking system south of the station. Port Authority leaders said the alternative to closing the station for 25 straight days was a full year of weekend service reductions and ...

U.S. teen arrested in Paris accused of throwing newborn baby out of hotel window

A U.S. teenager was arrested in Paris for allegedly throwing her newborn out of a hotel window, killing the baby, French authorities said Tuesday. The young mother, identified by local media as an 18-year-old American student, was part of a group of young adults from the U.S. traveling through Europe, according to the Paris Prosecutor’s Office. She’s accused of throwing the infant from a second-floor room in an eastern Paris hotel in the early hours of Monday, Paris Match reported. The baby was found alive in a trash can near the hotel — identified by CNN as an Ibis Styles hotel in the city’s 20th Arrondissement — and then rushed to a nearby hospital. “The newborn was given emergency care but did not survive,” prosecutors said, according to the Agence France-Presse. The young woman was traveling with EF Gap Year, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based organization that offers educational travel programs for young adults ages 18 to 22, a company spokesperson confirmed Tuesday. Giants hiring Iowa RBs coach Ladell Betts for revolving door position on Brian Daboll’s staff

The Giants ‘ new running backs coach already knows Tyrone Tracy Jr. well. Brian Daboll is hiring Iowa running backs coach Ladell Betts for the same position on New York’s coaching staff, sources said Monday. Betts, 45, a former NFL running back, has coached the Hawkeyes’ RBs since the 2021 college season. So he was on Iowa’s staff in Tracy’s final season there, as a wide receiver who saw some carries, before he transferred to Purdue and eventually switched to full-time running back as a Boilermaker. The Athletic first reported Betts’ hiring. Daboll now has added another piece of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz’s coaching tree with the Hawkeyes coach’s sons James Ferentz (assistant OL coach) and Steven Ferentz (defensive assistant) already on the Giants’ staff. Betts joins a coaching staff on the hot seat, however, and fills a vacancy where Daboll has been unable to find consistency. Betts will be the Giants’ fifth running backs coach in five years and their fourth in four years un...

Pope Francis remains conscious, in critical condition: Vatican

Pope Francis remained in critical condition Sunday in an Italian hospital as he worked to recover from a serious respiratory infection. “The night passed quietly, the Pope rested ,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said early Sunday in a statement. Francis, 88, remained conscious, Vatican officials said. He continued receiving “high flows” of supplemental oxygen on Sunday after his condition deteriorated Saturday and he required blood transfusions. Francis has been hospitalized since Feb. 14. He is battling a respiratory infection and pneumonia in both lungs. Doctors have only said the Pope’s prognosis is “reserved.” Francis has told his team “both doors are open,” surgeon Sergio Alfieri said Friday. His blood platelet count also dropped, leading to the transfusions he received. Pope Francis arrives in the Artemio Franchi stadium to ce...

Passengers on Delta Flight 4819 file suit after fiery crash-landing in Toronto

At least two passengers on Delta Flight 4819, which caught fire and flipped over during a crash-landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport this week, are suing the airline and its subsidiary Endeavor Air. In the first lawsuit, filed in Georgia federal court late Thursday, Marthinus Lourens claims he was “drenched with jet fuel” as the “burning plane” rolled over and then went belly up. He was left with injuries to his head, neck, back, knees and face as a result, as well as additional injuries caused when he released his seatbelt and fell to the ceiling of the upside-down aircraft, according to the complaint. Lourens says he has also been struggling with “severe emotional distress and mental anguish” in the days since the crash. He’s seeking more than $200,000 in damages. Another suit from passenger Hannah Krebs was filed in Minneapolis federal court on Friday, accusing the flight crew of “gross negligence and recklessness” and “inadequate training and supervision” by Delta....

A homeless man with more than three dozen arrests has been arrested for assaulting and trying to rape a woman on a Midtown subway train, police said Friday. Saudi Arabia’s crown prince wins points for hosting the Russia-US summit on Ukraine

By JON GAMBRELL DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi Arabia’s crown prince wasn’t in the room for the first high-level talks between Russia and the United States over Moscow’s war on Ukraine on Tuesday, but Mohammed bin Salman still won the day for hosting the gathering that could be a game-changer in the bloody conflict. The assertive 39-year-old heir to the throne in the oil-rich kingdom already has taken over Saudi Arabia as its de facto leader under his father, the 89-year-old King Salman. But the prince’s war in Yemen and the 2018 killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi , which U.S. intelligence agencies believe came at his orders, tarnished his reputation internationally. Crown Prince Mohammed now finds himself at the center of the Trump administration’s outreach to Russia, a country Saudi Arabia carefully maintained ties to during the war through the OPEC+ oil cartel . The prince likely caught President Donald Trump’s attention when he announced plans for...

As Israel uses US-made AI models in war, concerns arise about tech’s role in who lives and who dies

By MICHAEL BIESECKER, SAM MEDNICK and GARANCE BURKE TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — U.S. tech giants have quietly empowered Israel to track and kill many more alleged combatants more quickly in Gaza and Lebanon through a sharp spike in artificial intelligence and computing services. But the number of civilians killed has also soared, fueling fears that these tools are contributing to the deaths of innocent people. Egypt is developing a plan to rebuild Gaza, countering Trump’s call to depopulate the territory

By SAMY MAGDY CAIRO (AP) — Egypt is developing a plan to rebuild Gaza without forcing Palestinians out of the strip in a counter to President Donald Trump’s proposal to depopulate the territory so the U.S. can take it over. Egypt’s state-run Al-Ahram newspaper said the proposal calls for establishing “secure areas” within Gaza where Palestinians can live initially while Egyptian and international construction firms remove and rehabilitate the strip’s infrastructure. Egyptian officials have been discussing the plan with European diplomats as well as with Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, according to two Egyptian officials and Arab and Western diplomats. They are also discussing ways to fund the reconstruction, including an international conference on Gaza reconstruction, said one of the Egyptian officials and an Arab diplomat. The officials and diplomats spoke on condition of anonymity because the proposal is still being negotiated. The proposal comes after an int...
